At Siemens Financial Services we’re passionate about shaping the future and believe that the young generation of today will become our experts of tomorrow. Our apprenticeships are aimed at those who want to make a difference and provide valuable training and experience across a wide range of functions such as Business Development, Engineering, Operations or Customer Service within a global and dynamic business. In 2017/18, over 800,000 people participated in an apprenticeship in England, 94,000 less than in 2016/2017.

Yet studies conducted by the Centre for Economics and Business Research show that those who progress on to study a professional or higher apprenticeship will increase their earnings by an estimated £150,000 over their lifetime, with the added bonus of no university debt. So what are you waiting for?

A typical day for me

I joined Siemens Financial Services in September 2018 after leaving school and expressed an interest in finance from the get go. I began my first rotation of his apprenticeship in Operational Support where we’ll be following his experiences and progression in the team. Here is a typical day for me.

‘I usually start my day by getting into the office, checking my emails and grabbing a free coffee from one of the newly refurbished break out areas. At 9am the team get together for a huddle and go through the work we have planned and any upcoming meetings we need to prepare for. I found these huddles very useful as they brought the team together, outlined our objectives for the day and allowed us to ask any questions we might have.

Although the Finance Team isn’t a department that forms part of my rotation programme, my time in the Operations Support team has involved processing cheques and allocating BACs payments to agreements with the many SMEs we partner with. This is an area that I really enjoyed.

At 12:30pm the team and I go for lunch at the onsite café that’s not only subsidised for all employees and visitors, but also has delicious food! I found it really nice that the wider team and managers all sat with us and chatted with me and the other apprentices about our interests and plans for the weekend. Everyone has been really approachable and welcoming that I found we developed a close bond in our team from very early on.

At 1:30pm I’m back at my desk and catching up on emails before my 2pm one-to-one catch up with Pippa. As a Siemens Financial Services apprentice we spend 20% of our time doing training outside of our day-to-day scope of work which gives us the opportunity to explore other areas and gain new skills. I discuss with Pippa what’s next in my training plan and how I’ve been finding my apprenticeship so far. Pippa lets me know she’s discussed my interest in moving to a role within the Finance team in the future, with a previous apprentice who now has a permanent position there. She set up a meeting so that I could have an overview of the roles and responsibilities of the people in the Finance team.

At 3pm after our catch up, Pippa then introduces me to Jake who gives me a quick induction to the Finance department and team. Jake patiently answers all of my questions and helps me identify a few potential career paths within finance for me once I’ve completed my apprenticeship.

I’m back to my desk just before 5pm and ready to pack up for the day. I recently started a Siemens Financial Services five-a-side football team with a few other people from the Collections and Business Processing teams so I catch up with them before going to the game together.

So far my experiences at Siemens Financial Services has been totally positive. I felt I was given responsibility from the first day and treated as an equal within the team. My line manager Pippa was incredibly accommodating and gave me lots of independence to explore the various roles of my apprenticeship myself.’

I would highly recommend an apprenticeship with Siemens Financial Services as an alternative to University. It’s not only helped to develop me as a person and allowed me to pursue my passion, all whilst learning on the job with the support of a fantastic team’.
