They have been successful with this, allowing their customers concentrate on their core business of flying people from A to B while handling the annoyance of turbine maintenance for them.

Keeping an eye on your machines – all over the world

Small and medium-sized machine builders in Germany export the majority of their machines abroad. This is also true for Festo. When their machines eventually need repairing they now also provide a remote service for this.

Guaranteeing equipment performance – a new business opportunity on top

Machine tools manufacturer Heller Tools GmbH goes one step further. Having all this data transparency about their equipment use, they are planning to provide availability and output contracts for their products. This would offer additional planning securities to their customers, a guarantee you can sell.

All of these customer-centered industrial business models have one thing in common: they heavily rely on equipment data collected and interpreted in the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT).

Rolls-Royce adapts the inspection schedule for the turbines according to the data they collect from both, the airplane themselves, and their turbines. Festo has their connected pneumatic systems “tell” them what’s wrong all on their own, so that the company’s service engineers can help repair the machine defects remotely. Relying on the data insights of their equipment use, Heller expands this remote service idea by calculating the risk of having machine tool performance fall short of their customers’ needs.
